Coffee: Cancer Fighting or Breakfast Don’t??

August 29, 2014 By Julie Lanford MPH, RD, CSO, LDN

I promise to cover more details and evidence regarding breakfast. I realize that I was going to do it with the next post, but I wanted to add a spontaneous short topic update that was spurred on by a my facebook page follower. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Q: What are your thoughts on cancer patients drinking coffee? Can it reactivate cancer cells??A: Nope. Coffee (in moderation, like 18 ounces or less a day) is perfectly fine. Caffeine helps stimulate brain cells which might help … [Read more...]

Cancer Fighting Spices: Oregano

February 12, 2010 By Julie Lanford MPH, RD, CSO, LDN

A Family Favorite! Oregano is such a great spice! You can add it to almost anything including soups, pizza, sandwiches, and eggs. Just last night I made a "Real Italian Pizza" as inspired by Elizabeth's Pizza here in Winston Salem. I put olive oil on the crust with some crushed garlic, added tomatoes, onion, green pepper and sprinkled oregano, basil and crushed red pepper to it. Yum! Oregano can be grown in your yard very easily. Or, for an even more instant use, you can used the … [Read more...]

Okra: America’s Next Favorite Vegetable!

August 13, 2009 By Julie Lanford MPH, RD, CSO, LDN

Okay people: I know that okra is slimy in the middle or usually comes fried, but I think we need to move it off the list of least favorite vegetables! I'm not saying that we'll put it past potatoes (who are the top veggie mostly because they are the main ingredient in french fries!), but we can help it! Nutritional Benefit of Okra First off, okra is a great source of many cancer fighting and immune boosting nutrients. It's got 66% of the RDA for Vitamin K and is also high is … [Read more...]
