Heartburn can be very painful to the point you may think you are having a heart attack. And that’s the last thing someone needs to worry about when dealing with cancer and treatment!
While some heartburn will need medication, there are some things you can do to help.
- Eat no later than 2-3 hours before going to bed. Eating a big meal – or really anything – and then lying down can increase acid reflux, and that acid can cause painful heartburn.
- Avoid spicy and acidic foods like tomatoes, tomato sauce, curry powder, citrus, and hot peppers.
- Caffeine can also irritate and increase acid production, so reduce intake of caffeinated tea and coffee.
- Carbonated beverages can also be problematic.
- Try to get out and walk after eating. The movement of the body can aid in digestion, which can reduce the risk of acid coming back into the throat. Make walking a habit – it’ll be good for more than just your indigestion!
If these tips don’t work, be sure to talk with your medical team about medication management.
