Survivor Cooking Workshop: Recap With Recipes!

August 24, 2017 By Julie Lanford MPH, RD, CSO, LDN

About a week and a half ago, I hosted another one of our “Cancer Survivor Cooking Workshops.” This 4 hour workshop is funded by a grant from Athenas Run (Yah! Thank you!!), and we host them quarterly. In the past, I have used Chef Malena, and you can find recipes from the workshops she hosted here.

Sadly for us, Malena moved to DC for a great job opportunity. So I was back to the drawing board on a chef. Theoretically, I could teach, but I’m no chef and I love learning about techniques, short cuts and the “science” of cooking from the culinary experts. My clients deserve that too. I am just a regular cook. : – P

The great news is that Chef Don McMillan, at The Stocked Pot Cooking School agreed to teach the workshop, and also host, which made everything so much easier for me! He was a lot of fun, telling great stories and also helping us all realize that YES, we can cook and it doesn’t have to be complicated! Our theme for this Saturday was “Asian Cooking.”

I always start out my workshops with the basics on nutrition and cancer. It’s sort of my “cancer dietitian nutrition philosophy”. It’s what I blogged about in my last post, 5 Things to Know About Nutrition and Cancer. Once my part is done, it’s pretty much all Chef for the rest of the time!

Here are the links to the recipes we learned:

Chicken Veggie Stir Fry Recipe

Rice Pilaf Recipe

Classic Bread Recipe

Citrus Vinaigrette Recipe

Participants had a great time, learned a lot, and even got to leave with a new cooking tool, woohoo!

Also, since Chef Don’s team made such a beautiful salad for us to have with our salad dressing, I had to share a picture of it!

If you’re local to the Triad, NC area, and a cancer survivor, I’d love to see you at the next workshop! It will be October 21st and RSVP is required, so if you’d like to get on the list you can email me, or call our office at 336-760-9983.
